This is the developer portal for the Costa Rica exchange rate API on tipocambiocr.net. Reads are free and public. There is no API key. Putting a key in a script is a mistake: do not send the private ingest token, and do not POST rate data to these URLs.

Today's official rate is GET https://www.tipocambiocr.net/today.json. The JSON includes BCCR compra and venta for the calendar day in Costa Rica, plus the best ventanilla sale and purchase among institutions. Example: curl -s "https://www.tipocambiocr.net/today.json".

The full institution table is https://www.tipocambiocr.net/today/full.json. History is https://www.tipocambiocr.net/api/snapshots?from=YYYY-MM-DD, with a maximum span of about 2200 days per request. Agent discovery is https://www.tipocambiocr.net/llms.txt.

Sandbox, limits, and errors

There is no separate sandbox environment. These production endpoints are the safe place to try calls, because they only read public rates and cannot move money. Stay under 120 GET requests per IP per minute. Over the limit the API returns HTTP 429 and {"error":"Too many requests"}.

Responses use schemaVersion 1. The date field is the ventanilla board date, not the clock time of your request. After about 5:30 p.m. Costa Rica time a next-day preview may be stored; today.json switches the headline rate at midnight Costa Rica without a new publish from you.

Send Accept: text/markdown to this page, the homepage, /about, /contact, or /privacy. The response is Markdown with Content-Type: text/markdown and Vary: Accept. Unknown paths return HTTP 404, including a Markdown body when you send that Accept header. The sitemap is https://www.tipocambiocr.net/sitemap.xml.
